  • Very disappointing

    Ger | Sep 20, 2009

This is easily the most disappointing game I've ever played - the other reviews do really confuse me - I'd been looking forward to this game for a long time, but to be honest Condemasters should be ashamed to put the late Colin mcraes name on it as its nothing to do with him, rallying or any of the other games in the series.

The handling is unrealistic, the menu feels restrictive and unclear, the car selection is a joke, and there is very very few tracks and its so overly american I dont even know why they are trying to sell it here
    - the over tackyness of the game (e.g your oponents shouting rubbish at you mid race) makes it feel like a first attempt at a race game from the original playstation - im thinking ridge racer 1

Bottom line is if your a fan of rallying, or the original brilliant mcrae rally games, give this a wide birth as it will depress you !
There's Moto GP, Superbike and F1 games available but now no rallying game out there - lets hope the grand turismo rally section is good or that someone revives the wrc game as this is a load of cheesy, arcade nonsence which if your over 10 years old will get tiresome very quickly

I've no idea why they didnt call ken block dirt and take the opportunity to create a seperate game which gives the end to the mcrae series that the RALLY legend deserves and that rally fans are crying out for
    - if you like motorstorm you'll probably think this is great, for the rest of us who bought the original games and are the reason the series still exists - we can only hope someone else fills the rallying gap in the game market!

  • Mad Fun :D

i bought this game the day after it had been released, before i even unwrapped the game from its plastic cover, i was on codemasters website, trying to buy the bonus codes with my debit card in my crubby little mitts, the shock and horror, when i relised, "no bonus codes" :0 if you are anything like me, you hate all single player games, but you love playing vs real people online,

i can honestly say, this is the only ever single player game i've become addicted to :D the day i got it, i played single player for 7 hours, then the next day for 10 hours then today for 10 hours :D im close to getting to the end after about 27 hours, i think i might get it finished in another few more hours, i would of liked to get it finished today, but had bottom pains and was a painful struggle trying to get out of my chair,

the bottom line is, if you like beautiful realistic graphics and driving off road, get this game, you wont regret it ever, you'll turn into a dirt 2 zombie with no life like me :) this game is so brilliant and amazing fun to play, i was feeling sick and slightly dirty, i knew i was going to set up my logitech g25 wheel, and my palms were sweating, i felt abit guilty to have so much fun, its so wrong, but feels so right thank you codemasters and thanks for actually listening to your fans

im 40 yrs old, but dirt 2 makes me feel like a kid again, its just to much fun! i'll stop ranting on now lol..... buy it!!!!

  • It's awesome, dude!

I've been a long time fan of the Colin McRae games, starting with Colin McRae 2 on the PC. I still play it from time to time! Anyway, it's been a long time since then, and this version, in Dirt 2, is up there at the top of my list of driving games.

As said many times, the game has had a heavy injection of American X-Games style, maaaan, but it doesnt detract from what is, from a game play point of view, a very very good driving game indeed, dude.

I miss the simplicity of the Dirt 1 menu system, as the new layout is a bit over the top but you get used to it.

Driving wise, it's just brilliant. I couldn't care less how realistic it is compared to a real rally car, as I've never driven one, but I do care about how it feels when you're controlling a rally car through your joypad, and in that respect it's fantastic. When you execute a perfect power slide through a long sweeping bend, it's just awesome! The cars are twitchy and hard to control at first, but given a little practice, you'll be loving it in no time.

As a previous reviewer said, you can set the game up from Easy to 'very hard indeed', I'm playing on 'casual' as I find 'Serious' a little too hard at the moment (needs more practice I think). I haven't even tried Hardcore yet! The Serious setting is a tough challenge, as your opponents are very aggressive and fast, so its very rewarding when you do beat the suckers. I think for most people, the Casual setting is perfect, as it will allow you to win if you get things right throughout most of your race, and allows for small errors. But you'll pay for it with a lower position if you mess things up big time.

Graphics wise, well, again this game is top notch. The detail of the cars and tracks is simply stunning. I still haven't got tired of watching the replays after each race, as they graphics really are so good. Everything moves, breaks, bends. Your car, rocks, trees, bushes. They all react to each other. The attention to detail is amazing.

I'm pretty sure, if you're into this genre of game, you will not be disappointed. Dude.

  • A Quality, Engaging & Entertaining Racing

I'm not going to harp on about, what could be construed as, the more negative aspects of this game that have been covered in detail elsewhere such as the overt Americanisation and move towards an Off-Road "Motorstorm" theme rather than pure Rally - minor gripes if one sees them that way. Other particular minor gripes would be the lack of split-screen multiplay (as ever) and the somewhat dubious damage model (at times). Cars are generally constructed of steel, fibre-glass and carbon fibre, not plasticine.

What I will focus on is the aspect of the game which Codemasters have, in my opinion, improved most of all. GRID is a fantastic racing game but, to many casual gamers (like me), it was simply too frustatingly difficult. Even on the "Basic" mode of difficulty, one had to drive on the absolute edge and beyond and nail a perfect racing line just to stay with the rest of the pack, let alone win a race. Spin off and it was game over, unless you used the Flashback feature.

Guess what! In Dirt 2, we have an "Easy" mode which means just that - Easy to win races. We have a "Casual" mode which is best suited to casual gamers right through to the insane level of difficulty you can get in GRID. So, anyone who parts with their hard earned cash for this product can enjoy it and feel confident of getting through the Tour - it's how it should be isn't it? Codemasters get a big gold star off me for this and, as long as they keep to this model for all their future racing games, I will be a lifelong fan.

In summary, a hugely fun and accessible Racing Game from one of the leaders in the market genre. Highly recommended to ANYONE, like me, who's a petrolhead gamer but has a life outside of the Playstation Network.
